Temporary Art Space 02/05/2011
Staying on the theme of containers. This has been sat at the end of JBR Walk for a few months now. Its never open but has neon graffiti and fairy lights on the side and I've always wondered what it was. So the other day it was open and its a temporary art gallery. Pretty cool. Its a shame it gets little passing traffic sat were it is, but group a few of these together and start moving them around every weekend and Dubai could be onto something. Also maybe get some cool art inside too...but yeah... potential. Sharjhart at MOMA 10/11/2010
I have been so impressed with the Sharjah Art Foundation. I first saw their brandmark at ArtDubai this year, I so liked their collateral I bought a bag designed by them to support their cause and spread the word. They now have a really modern website and are pushing the foundation across the globe, establishing themselves as a leading voice on art in the Middle East. Very impressive, it all seems more grassroots than the fine art scene of Abu Dhabi, perhaps its the new dalston of the gulf! I look forward to seeing more. Cut & Paste Shoreditch 10/11/2010

Art Dubai again this year, I thought the main room was impressive and this year was so much more on show. I was impressed so wont say anything negative about it not being the same as in London...I hope ArtDubai continues to grow and next year will be even better- come on Dubai! Robot and Spark 19/06/2009
I met Robot and Spark this week. We spoke about the success of 'My Name is Robot', the last exhibition at the Jam Jar. These supercool robots caused quite a stir when they launched earlier this year and their next exhibition 'Bring Your Nemesis' is set to be even bigger and better. I'm looking forward to it, and some awesome collaborations to boot. Looks like these types of project are really happening out here, and it seems like there are people here who really care about the Dubai design scene. I'll keep you posted about the upcomming exhibition and other Robot and Spark projects, hopefully there will be a website with lots of info coming soon. In the meantime check out the blog here. Hooray! Some Art Week images. I went to Bastakiya Art Fair which, set in the old tiny houses and courtyards, gave each instillation an individual gallery space, and with things in trees, videos in hidden corners and dusty rooms filled with strange sounds I thought it was easily on a par with any exhibition I've seen in Dalston. Admittedly I chose the most arthouse of the events this week but I'd much rather spend my day exploring and discoverig than in a sterile, plush carpeted 'gallery' stocked with fine art fit for the Dubai elite. Wonderful - and good food too. |
